Here’s a riddle for the season. Name a particular event that accounts for a substantial amount of retail sales. In fact, this event is, without question, the “make or break” component of retail sales for the entire year. Yet, this event is not mentioned by name by any merchant at any time.
The answer, of course, is Christmas, the Christian feast of the Incarnation. How craven a society we have become when the Word, the very source of fragile business success in this case, cannot be uttered by name! But, why pick on retailers? So pervasive is the influence of the atheist politically correct do-gooders these days, that Catholics leaving Christmas Mass might wish each other “Happy Holidays.”
Since the Church is not receiving a percentage of Christmas sales, the least we can do is resurrect “Merry Christmas.” Be the first on your block to make this daring move, and strike a blow against the speech control fascists. Ironic indeed that these Leftist morons, who make a career out of wrapping themselves in the first amendment, betray its very essence.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Note that “free exercise” of religion is guaranteed, and freedom of speech cannot be abridged. The problem is that this amendment refers only to what the Feds cannot do, and through the fourteenth amendment, what the states are prohibited from doing, as well. The door is left wide open for any group to use peer pressure to achieve its ends, by exercising its OWN free speech rights. You are most assuredly free to ignore them, and to remind them that there is no Constitutional provision that protects them from what they may deem “offensive” speech–certainly at the low threshold of merely saying “Merry Christmas.”
Moreover, there is absolutely no legal theory requiring any person or entity to exercise some mythic level of “sensitivity,” to avoid offending some hypothetical individual, especially as a matter of prior restraint.
All of this is probably well understood by most of the speech control fascists, but, undaunted by the very same Constitution that gives them the right to act so reprehensibly, they press their case ever forward. Thus, the holiday that can’t be named, despite the first amendment, is driven out of the American cultural mainstream by those who are energized by the very same amendment. How perverse can you get?
What better time to ask ourselves…What would Jesus do? Chapter 21 of Matthew provides some insights.
Verse 12, the cleansing of the Temple, indicates that He would directly confront those who were doing wrong.
In Verses 28-32, He tells the chief priests and elders that they are worse than tax collectors and prostitutes, so He would certainly not shrink from challenging and insulting those in authority.
Matthew 24:9 makes it quite clear that true Christians will be hated by the world, and 24:13 notes that the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
It is way past time to honor the reason for the season. The babe born in Bethlehem was no Galilean flower child, but was a virile stand up guy. Let Him be your model as you face the atheist juggernaut.
Merry Christmas.
